To the editor:

The Putnam Valley Library is, in my opinion, running one of the biggest scams our town has ever seen. I am referring to Proposition 1, which will be on the ballot next week. Using a badly worded petition that appeared to call for the modest increase of $27,000, they managed to dupe enough people to get the initiative on the ballot. The truth is that this is no one-time increase -- it will be a PERMANENT library tax on our town of at least $320,000, which can never be reduced.

Ms. Keresey and the board acknowledge they are trying to change the way our library is funded. The misinformation they are spreading around town in order to achieve that goal is staggering. They have put up signs and sent out false propaganda claiming if the proposition fails, the library will be closed. That is absolutely false and they know it.

They say if the proposition is passed, we will be able to vote on the budget. That is just like voting in North Korea where there is only one candidate. Sure, we would be able to vote but we would have NO option except to vote to increase the budget. Why would anyone ever agree to this?

I have lived in this town for more than 50 years and our town boards always have been generous when it comes to supporting the library. As it stands now, we do have control of the budget via our elected town board members. On the other hand, there is very little accountability and transparency on the part of the UNELECTED Library Board.

There is nothing wrong with the way the taxpayers are funding the library now. This make-believe crisis is a power play that's been manufactured by Ms. Keresey and her cronies. They should be ashamed of themselves. There's an old saying -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Next Tuesday, Vote NO on Proposition 1.
